She studied hard, worked hard, and accomplished so much. She had a loving family, fulfilling work, and wonderful friends. Perhaps she was busy, overwhelmed, and utterly exhausted, but she made sure to always take care of everyone else, and she looked damn good while doing it all.
Then the woman arrived at midlife.
Her kids weren’t home as much, and her parents were older or gone. She felt lonely, blah, and didn’t quite recognize herself in the mirror. She constantly asked herself “Now what?”
She tried to find some hobbies and joined a gym, but that didn’t seem to be the answer. This incredibly smart and driven woman could find plenty of options for self-improvement to help her try to hold onto her youth, but not one of them offered what she really craved: connection, adventure, and belonging. She eventually started to believe all the messages she received about female aging and midlife so she gave in and did what she was “supposed” to do…She went over the hill to the dreaded “other side,” where she withered away, dried up, and disappeared.

We are three women in our 40’s (yep, right in the midst of midlife ourselves), all with PhDs in Clinical Psychology, and each with years of training and experiences in our private practice. As we’ve gotten older, we’ve been shocked by the lack of information and support for this phase of life. We were inundated with books and guides for other pivotal life transitions like puberty and pregnancy, but no one talks about midlife or menopause, making it feel confusing, shameful, and just plain weird.
During the pandemic we experienced a midlife slump ourselves, so we created a fun and informative podcast called Inspiration from the Couch. This spiced up our days and allowed us to channel some badass creative energy. Most importantly, it fostered collaboration and connection. We got along so well and had so much fun, we decided to create the Badass Rebellion, a movement to help extraordinary women celebrate and savor a badass midlife.
